GOLF COURSE RENOVATION       COURSE DESIGN GALLERY       JUNIOR GOLF

Members, management, staff and invited guests of IMG Academies Golf & Country Club at El Conquistador gathered on April 17, 2003 to break ground for the $2.5 million renovation of the 30-year-old golf course. This is the first major renovation project in the course’s 30-year history. The “new” IMG Academies Golf & Country Club at El Conquistador has been designed by Gene Bates Golf Design of Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Reopened in November 2003, the course was lengthened by 200 yards, to 6,855 yards from the back tees, and the routing of Nos. 10 and 18 holes was reversed, resulting in a spectacular “island” green for No. 10 and an all-around “new-course feel” for IMG Academies Golf & Country Club at El Conquistador’s member players. The renovation project also included replacement of irrigation and pump stations, enlarging the driving range and rebuilding all sand traps.

The renovation’s top priorities were to increase playability, maintain challenge, and improve maintenance (through better irrigation and a new drainage system). Through careful shaping of the course, several fairways that had been “crowned” due to seams of rock running through them were “repaired” to create a more playable golf course. Where did the “new” dirt come from to raise fairways or create mounds? At IMG Academies Golf & Country Club at El Conquistador and other courses, the design team expands lakes or creates new ones to generate the dirt needed. The result is a better fairway and, on a few of the holes, increases challenge by the water.

The new grass, is a state-of-the-art hybrid developed specifically for southern courses. ‘TifEagle’ was planted on the greens and ‘TifSport’ on the fairways, tees and rough. These thicker, denser grasses can be cut shorter and allow the golf ball to “sit up” better.

The golf course renovation was kicked off in April 2003 with a groundbreaking ceremony, followed by a members’ golf event, dinner and dancing on the first fairway.

The General Contractor began earth moving on April 21, and the new course is now open for play by IMG Academies Golf & Country Club at El Conquistador members and guests.

With the new grasses, all the infrastructure improvements and “new and improved” features, IMG Academies Golf & Country Club at El Conquistador is more than just restored; it is the area’s premier country club golf course.

The second in a 3-part editorial series on the golf course renovation has appeared in Golfing Lifestyle magazine. The articles, co-authored by golf course designer Matt Swanson and IMG Academies Golf & Country Club at El Conquistador head golf professional Don Findley, are intended to educate the golfing public about the art and science of golf course design and promote membership at IMG Academies Golf & Country Club at El Conquistador.
